My house is filled with obstacles. The desk. The couch. Spider colonies. As a child, I was not allowed to celebrate Halloween As such, my desire to dress up like a flying nun on October 31st and have jolly times with people dressed as Iron Chef Morimoto and Pat Nixon grows stronger with each passing year. I’ve never eaten lotus root. Question: would a normal (keyword) person ever have reason to thin their blood? Tobey Maguire is way more heroic when he’s performing abortions than when he’s webbing from rooftop to rooftop. The moths want in. There’s never enough time in the day.

Yesterday, I saw a man walking down the highway carrying a cross on his back. “Look, Steve,” I said, “That man is dragging a torture device down the road.” It could easily have become a road hazard should it have fallen off of him onto the road. How ridiculous. Fancies himself Simon of Cyrene I imagine.

At work, I learned of Amma the Hugging Saint. She has been known to hug over 50,000 people in one day. She hugs 18 hours a day and has hugged 27 million people in the last 30 years. She is trademarked. Remarkable.

I bought an absolutely absurd bra today. It was just one of those days when you think, I need to buy an absolutely absurd bra. And then you do.

Of summer and spiders

I will never get used to the spiders. I am a girl who is meant to live in a spider-free loft, easily air conditioned and filled with technology, not a house surrounded by wildlife and filled with spiders. Yesterday there was a huge spider by the bathtub. I missed him the first two times I attempted to extinguish him using a box to maximize his right angle-situatedness. The Shaq shoe finished it. Then I was about to get in the shower today when I noticed another large spider sitting quietly (as spiders are wont to do) between the folds of the shower curtain. Once again, the Shaq shoe came into play. I hate feeling like the spider angel of death, but I must have my cold showers, and those cold showers must be spider-free.

I just watched Hellboy. Not the second one, the first. It was dreadful. Saying it’s a solid two stars would be giving it more credit than it deserves. Horribly paced. Boring as hell until an hour and thirty seven minutes. No real conflict. Easily burnt gobbly evil bugs + eggs. Oh, but the fire that destroys those gobbly things didn’t even semi-permanently incapacitate our intrepid heroes. End of the world averted with a single choice that took about 10 seconds to make after someone said, “No, you have a choice.” Grenades can blow up a monster, but Hellboy holding the grenades, oh he’s just fine. Soul retrieval through a mild threat crossing over between two worlds. I have no problem at all with just going with a movie and saying, well this can happen in this world. But this went way beyond that. It didn’t even seem to follow its own rules. I never felt much of anything was really at stake because any moment there was a problem, a solution presented itself posthaste and within 5 minutes all was resolved. Bad acting. The best part was Ron Perlman, but he’s not enough to carry the whole movie. I did like the golemishness part though as well, but, as with Perlman, a golem can only carry the movie so far. It really was just not a good movie. Very disappointing. I honestly wanted to like it. So bad though. It’s terribly hot here, and I may go see Hellboy 2 some scorching afternoon to escape the heat. It can only be better than this one. Thank goodness there’s Batman in a week.
